Creative Cartography with Ed Fairburn

Illustrations in Ink on Maps from around the World
Posted by Gestalten—11/2015

Cardiff-based artist Ed Fairburn hatches cheekbones onto city blocks and weaves strands of hair from river banks and freeways in his work. As he studies each map and familiarizes himself with the geographic and architectural elements, patterns and forms become clear in the contours of the landmasses. He traces these rogue elements, outlining and shading the faces that then seem so obvious when interwoven with the map’s mountains and roads.

Explore the world through the maps made by a new generation of cartographers in our book Mind the Map.
