Beeing Human

Futuristic Fashion with a Little Help from Honey Bees
Posted by Gestalten—08/2017

The honey bee remains a modern marvel: from their hive-minded social structures to the complex honey combs that they build so readily, the bee remains a fountain of inspiration for everyone from architects and engineers to designers and artists—designer Jamela Law included. The fashion student, who also releases work as part of the Baëlf label, drew heady references to bee's architectural and biological prowess in her series of 3D-printed line Beeing Human. From hexagonal plates to the wirey extension and arching chestplates, the pieces push for a thorough reevaluation of our relationship to the natural world around us. Mother Nature’s beautiful, Law points out, and it would do us some good to remember that.

The future-forward garments are printed in an advanced polymer called BioFila Silk, which is a filament that hopes to revolutionize the way designers can collect and use silk. To see the work of others pushing the envelope in the fashion industry, revisit our book Otherworldly: Avant-Garde Fashion and Style
