It’s Electric

Our Top Picks of Innovative Cars from the Frankfurt Motor Show
Posted by Gestalten—09/2017

The Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 filled the streets with self-driving and electric cars from around the world—the industries putting the pedal to the metal in terms of innovation, and there was plenty to see for all. Take the Renault Symbioz: with a slight steel frame, wide-spanning windows, and wooden detailing, the car affects the stylings of a contemporary home. Audi, on the other hand, focused on the interiors for the Audi Aicon. A touch-sensitive panel is accessible for passengers to browse the web or make calls—a first class pairing for the luxurious interior with rich interior embellishments.

Renault Symbioz

Renault has revealed an autonomous, electric concept car as an extension of the home. The car's exterior is designed to fit the architecture of the contemporary home, while the vehicle also connects to the home wirelessly. Inside, the living-room-inspired interior includes four seats that can pivot to face each other. The design also includes a platform that allows the car to be lifted up onto a roof terrace.

BMW i Vision Dynamics

BMW announced their plans to release 12 pure-electric cars by 2025, the BMW i Vision Dynamics is a first showcase of how these future cars might look like. The four-door Gran Coupe with a range of 600 kilometres (373 miles), a top speed of over 200 km/h (120 mph) and acceleration of 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in four seconds has been described by critics as a competitor for Tesla. CEO Harald Krüger said: "We are electrifying the heart of the BMW brand and, at the same time, elevating BMW i into a totally new dimension."

Honda Urban EV Concept

Honda's new electric city car should be available for purchase in two years already. Honda president and CEO Takahiro Hachigo announced: "This is not some vision of the distant future; a production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019." The vehicle's design is futuristic and at the same time nostalgically retro, referencing Honda's 1970s Civic and N600 models. It's 3.9 metres long, it can accommodate four passengers, and it displays interactive messages on a screen at the front of the car, including greetings, advice for other drivers on the road and charging status updates.

Audi Aicon

With no steering wheel and no pedals, the only human intervention required in Audi's electric self-driving Aicon concept vehicle is the use of the touch-sensitive control panel that allows passengers to watch films, search the internet, make video calls or use social media, while the car's interior has a "luxurious ambience of a first-class airline cabin." According to Audi, the car could cover distances of 700 to 800 kilometres (435 to 497 miles) on a single charge, and could be charged to 80 per cent of capacity in less than 30 minutes.

Smart Vision EQ ForTwo

With their autonomous, electric, two-seater concept vehicle, Smart aims to bridge the gap between public and personal transport. The car has no steering wheel or pedals, opening up the interior space for passengers to relax in. Smart CEO Annette Winkler states: "The Smart Vision EQ ForTwo is our vision of future urban mobility. It is the most radical car-sharing concept car of all: fully autonomous, with maximum communication capabilities, friendly, comprehensively personalisable and, of course, electric."

Mercedez-Benz EQA

Ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz Dieter Zetsche said they will offer an electric version of every car manufactured by 2022. The Concept EQA previews the inevitable compact SUV that will carry a 60-kWh battery which can be recharged wirelessly and offers a range of nearly 400 km (250 miles).
