Immaculate Consumption in Absurd Juxtapositions
Posted by Gestalten—11/2015

Some say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. American photographer Jason DeMarte, however, might disagree. For his work, DeMarte juxtaposes wildlife dioramas and exhibits with elements of overt consumerism—prepackaged dinners, for example, and the commonplace medicines. In doing so, he hopes to draw attention to the distance between how we interpret the natural world and how we approach consumer culture. He says, “What becomes clear is that the closer we come to mimicking the natural world, the further away we separate ourselves from it.”

Like many young artists, DeMarte is reimagining the collage to create exciting new juxapositions and bodies of work. See more contemporary collaging in our book The Age of Collage.
