Malan Vorster’s Tree House

In the Canopies of Cape Town
Posted by Gestalten—06/2017

For this family estate in the wine country outside of Cape Town, the architects at Malan Vorster staggered four silo-like cylinders to share a surprisingly spacious interior rich with geometric harmony. Steel and timber come together in ramps, facades, and ancillary supports. An arcade of untreated wooden blinds screen the natural light, casting an even-tempered glow across the interior. The space exists on a system of levels quite similar to that of a classic treehouse: Outposts scattered across the upper regions offer lookouts, hidden alcoves, and retreats.
