Get Lost in the American Artist’s Hypnotic Stop Motions
Posted by Gestalten—11/2016

As an animation technique, stop motion offers a world of possibilities; American artist Lauren Gregory seeks to explore its hypnotic nature in her animated paintings. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Gregory uses her MFA in painting to create stunning sequences of paintings that she later strings together as animations and music videos, including the official video for atmosphere-pop artist Toro y Moi. Using glass plates as her medium of choice, the animator, director, and painter creates and photographs the base painting. From there, she introduces slight changes and documents each one. The result? Swirling swimmers and crackling fireplaces drawn entirely by hand.

“I‘m inspired by things that are naturally cyclical or mesmerizing, and by things that human beings love to stare art, such as water, fire, and portraits of other humans,” the prolific triple-threat says. “These things are just more fun to look at if they move.”
