Drive On with Autophoto

Famed Photographers Turn Their Cameras on Their Cars in the New Exhibition
Posted by Gestalten—06/2017

Justine Kurland

For their latest exhibition, Fondation Cartier is centering the focus on a four-wheeled sitter: “Autophoto” puts well-known photographers and their automobiles on display. Jürgen Teller, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Man Ray, and more contributed to the star-studded show in Paris, which opened to the public in April. Some of the cars are flashy speedsters; others are well-loved artifacts of family times past and present. The show goes deeper, too: the automobile changed our relationships with physical and ideological distance, as expanses quickly became surmountable thanks to amped horsepower. Preview some of the pieces included in the show below, or browse our selection of Gestalten books about cars, bikes, and motorcycles.
