ZEB Pilot House by Snohetta

Finding a Home in a Zero-Emission Buildings
Posted by Gestalten—01/2017

It can be hard to define what makes a house a home. Is it the familiar scents with which we grew up? Is it the marks that our lives have left on the walls? Perhaps its the warm embrace of a cozy space. Nevertheless, when the architects at Snøhetta embarked on a mission to build a zero-emission building in the form of single-family home, they put creating an inviting and emotive house alongside eliminating its carbon footprint as the main objective.

Built on a tilted axis, the house leans underneath a slanted roof peppered with solar panels. Brick, wooden, and glass surfaces line the indoor areas to preserve the heat and elevate the interior air quality. The ZEB Pilot House is a maze of lines and edges that belies the home’s coziness. Indeed, the eco-conscious building brings together an environmentally-minded sensitivity and livable comfort in a single volume.
