Join Juan Velasco once more for his fourth workshop with Gestalten. The founder and creative director of 5W Infographics will host a workshop on the power of infographics and visual storytelling in Singapore on February 18 and 19.
This two-day workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to contemporary information design, data visualization, and the creation of infographics that are sophisticated, visually engaging, and easy to understand. The course structure emphasizes practicing different aspects of the data-visualization process in a rich, interactive environment. Hands-on projects will challenge each participant to develop new skills as well as fuel their creativity.
In addition to principles of graphing and data management, the course will focus on information design principles, the use of alternative forms, and how to add personality to a visualization. The class will offer an overview of essential tools and strategies for creating engaging and animated interactive graphics for mobile devices and the web.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
-Understand the role of infographics, data visualization, and information design in bringing clarity and efficiency to any key internal and external communications
-Identify opportunities for infographics in texts and written reports
-Efficiently decide how to present different types of data and visual messages
-Create effective storyboards and scripts for interactive graphics
-Use the latest professional tools to create information graphics for print and digital media, as well as identify available resources to further expand your skill set
This workshop is a two-day practical guide for working journalists, designers, and students who are interested in developing the skills to create interactive information graphics and data visualizations for print and online media alike. The curriculum includes design theory lessons supplemented by practical exercises.
Required: Laptop computer. Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and Microsoft Excel is recommended, but not required.
About the host
Juan Velasco was the art director of National Geographic magazine from 2008 to 2014. Prior to National Geographic, he worked as a graphics artist for El Mundo in Spain and as the graphics art director for The New York Times.
In 2001, he founded his own consulting company 5W Infographics, which is based in New York City and Madrid. Juan has won over a hundred Society of News Design and Malofiej awards—including the Best of Show Award in 2013—as well as awards from the Society of Publication Design and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist as part of a team of writers and visual journalists working for the New York Times.
As a consultant, Juan does workshops and graphics stylebooks and has helped restructure graphics departments around the world, including LeMonde in France. Since 2001, he has been an instructor for the “Show, Don’t Tell” data visualization workshop at the renowned Malofiej Infographic World Summit.
